Oppo, if you are going to wear a logo, shouldn’t it be of one you love? This evening I need your help in coming up with a few Rules for Automotive Branded Apparel . Give me your thoughts on the following:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

(By “get away with it” I mean do you need to worry about generating negative reactions. Appearing to be a “douche” or “poser” as they say).

1. You support a brand but do not own any of their cars (and don’t have any upcoming ownership plans due to lifestyle circumstances), can you wear their clothing?

Example 1: You want to wear a Citroen, Datsun, or Koenigsegg branded t-shirt (but won’t own any because unavailable in market or realistically impossible to own). Can you get away with it?

2. You support the brand AND currently own one of their products, can you wear their clothing?

Example 2: You own a BMW M3 or S1000XR, can you get away with wearing a BMW branded jacket? Can you get away with wearing it WHILE driving the vehicle?

3. You support the brand and have (but do not currently) own one of their products, can you wear their clothing?

Example 3a: You used to own an EVO for two years back in the nineties, but haven’t owned a Mitsubishi since. You are still fond of the brand. Can you get away with wearing a Mitsubishi cap?

Example 3b: You used to own a 360 Modena, can you ever get away with wearing a Ferrari cap?

4. You support the brand but do not own their vehicle, however you do aspire to be an owner, can you wear their clothing?

Example 4: You don’t own an Aston Martin, but you love Bond and love the brand, can you get away with wearing an Aston Martin cardigan?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Those are some basic categories and I’m sure we can flesh this out more as we go. Thank you for your help!

If you’re in ‘merica you do what ever you want because in ‘merica we have freedoms. I don’t see fault in any one of those scenarios.

Hmmm... I have Mustang stuff from my dad, but never owned one. I have a Challenger shirt because I worked on that program, also never owned one. I have two suuuuuuuuper tacky Camaro shirts because of course, and still have all my Jeep/XJ shirts. I also have Corvette Racing gear because MERICA.

I believe in wearing branded clothes that I have owned or currently own.

That being said, I recently bought a Porsche but would hate to wear anything Porsche branded because every time I meet a guy wearing Porsche clothing at a car show he tells me about his investment portfolio.

Just checking. A guy got razed on for wearing a lot of BMW branded gear getting out of his recently purchased E46. I have also known guys to be hated on for wearing Ferrari gear, whether than own a 458 or a Soul.

You can wear what you want, also I think any circumstance you mentioned it completely non-douchy to me.

There is also the Racing team apparel, I support Mercedes AMG F1 team and have some apparel by them, I didn’t own a Mercedes when I bought it, I used to and it didn’t matter to me.

Example B. I also own a Ferrari F1 Shirt and a Cap, also I have Ferrari shoes, I do not intend to get a Ferrari ever (I’m more a Porsche, Pagani and Lambo fan if I ever get that money) BUT I do support their F1 team and am a massive Vettel and Kimi fan so I wear them no problem.

I got a free t-shirt when I bought my new bike. Made sure to order a size too small as well, just like in the pictures.

My take is that it’s appropriate anywhere t-shirts are appropriate.

I think for the most part it’s never even a thought, but people get resentful fairly quickly in some areas. Like being 24 years old with a Gallardo, those guys tend to be hazed a lot, and even more so when they wear Lamborghini branded gear.

1: yes
2: no
3: if its the same vintage, yes
4: eehhhhh. depends on the brand.

I would say do what you want, but don’t overdo it.

EG, a Porsche shirt or cap is fine, but a Porsche shirt AND cap AND sunglasses AND belt buckle AND jacket AND driving gloves makes you look like an idiot (unless you work for or are sponsored by Porsche and you’re contractually obligated to dress like that).

Also, the more prestigious/exclusive the brand, the worse it looks if you really wear it loud and proud. Stuff with large, in your face, Ferrari and Lamborghini logos is going to get a worse reaction than something with a big Ford emblem. Either you wind up looking like a poser, or if you actually do have one of those cars, people see it as you rubbing it in their faces. Just can’t win.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that you tend to meet more people enthusiastic about the “ownership” rather than the “experience” once you move into higher performance and luxury branded clothing.

The classic “no double lettering” rule from sorority life holds true.

This is a summary of my feelings on the subject. I couldn’t agree more. There is a certain amount of “total value” you can wear. Like a Porsche watch is pretty ridiculous for a high schooler, but not odd for a 40 year old. Datsun t-shirt is always gold no matter age or ride.

What if I have a shirt that features a car I do not own from a brand that makes a car I do own?

I really don’t see the fault in it. I go to UT but never get yelled at for wearing Vols gear.. Same thing for cars imo.

I have BMW, Nissan, Audi, Toyota, Ferrari stuff I wear. I have owned everything but a Ferrari, but it’s all Scuderia Ferrari for the F1 team so it’s no different than any other sports team gear someone might wear.

Although if I owned a Ferrari I’d feel super douchey rocking a bunch of Ferrari gear while driving it.

Like wearing a Vette shirt when you own a Cruze? I think this is a majority of what happens. Not sure about the reverse though, but I bet that is usually a win. Like a GT owner getting out of their car wearing a Mustang shirt would come across as humble and badass due to that.

If you’re 24 and owning a Lambo, who gives a shit what some peasant thinks of your shirt! ;)

I own a z3 but my only BMW shirt has an e9 on it, which I think is kinda different from both examples. I don’t really care enough to to stop wearing the shirt, though, because it’s super soft.

Eh...wear what you want. I agree that some take it too far. I have a Ferrari T-shirt. Which apparently, is a big no-no regardless of whether or not you have a Ferrari (I dunno that is the impression that I get)

It cost way too much money for a T-shirt ($40) but my wife bought it as a gift. It’s comfortable and looks cool...whatevs.

I also own way too many Porsche shirts. None of which are made by Porsche, they are Blipshift, Society 6, etc...

I own apparel from the Honda tuning company Mugen. I have several of their parts on my car. I’m still waiting for the stars to align on a rainy day so I can step out of my Mugen modified car holding my Mugen parasol while wearing a Mugen baseball cap and Mugen t shirt.

I think of it the same as sports teams. “what you don’t own th e Yankees?” A couple items are fine, but come up decked out in full Ferrari or Porsche design

Yeah, douche.
